Statue of Oscar Wilde
Name: Oscar Wilde
Nickname: The Fag on the Crag[1], The Queer with the Leer[2], The Quare in the Square"
Where: Northwest of Merrion Square Park
Coordinates: 53.3408;-6.2505Latitude: 53°20′26.88″N
Longitude: 6°15′1.8″W
Inauguration date: 28th October 1997
Sculptor: Danny Osborne
Story: Colourful statue of the famous Irish poet, situated in Merrion Square just across from his childhood home. Its colours are of the natural stone from which it is carved. You will remark how Oscar lounges arrogantly on a stone, overlooking the people.
The Irish Times critized Merrion Square "random sculpture" in its 11th August 2009 edition and notes about the statue of Oscar Wilde:
"Trees and shrubbery were removed at the northwestern corner of the park in 1997 to make room for Barry Osborne’s post-modern statue of Oscar Wilde, in a louche pose reclining on a rock, with some of his pithy sayings (“I drink to keep body and soul apart”) on a pair of pillars in front. But at least the location is opposite his father’s house."[3]
