Story: This statue is certainly the most famous one in Dublin. Located centrally on the Southern end of O'Connell Street, literally between the busiest areas in south and north Dublin city centre. When you first arrive in Dublin by taxi or bus, you will probably pass along the statue of Daniel O'Connell. If you look closely you should see bullet holes from the battles of 1916-'21. The four winged figures at the base represent O'Connell's defining features of patriotism, courage, fidelity and eloquence. Two of them bear the scars of bullet holes from the 1916 Easter Rising. Above this a drum surrounded by figures is supposed to represent the man's labours and triumphs.
The statue also gave its name to O'Connell street.
Also, the head of Mr. O'Connell seems to be a favourite spot for pigeons to shit on. No wonder, the spire being too spiky to sit down, O'Connell is the highest statue in the area.
