Notes
The theme of Aspiration is the struggle for freedom that took place on this site (formerly Bolands Mill) in 1916. Yet it is not a conventional war memorial. A slight female figure (representing Ireland) scales the seemingly endless walls of the building. Gillespie's work, which is influenced by sculptor Henry Moore and painter Edvard Munch, can be seen throughout the city. This, one of his personal favourites, uses the experimental technique of working in foam-filled fibre glass rather than bronze.[1]
