Taking a bus in Dublin
Fares
Since 2009, fares have been raised as per the following:
€1.05 becomes €1.15
€1.50 - €1.60
€1.70 - €1.80
€2.00 - €2.20
Things to bring:
A map and coins (they don't take notes!), exact-fare. This is especially funny for the 15 cents part ...
To get around in Dublin, you will hardly be able to avoid busses. As there is no undeground system and very few rail systems in place, the bus will often be your only choice.
What is positive about Dublin bus is that most of the times vehicles won't be overcrowded. Dublin bus operates the same double-decker busses than London and therefore provides space for a lot of people. It is also really fast as it uses Quality Bus Corridors (tracks for buses only) and therefore flashes by other traffic even in rush hour.
At the bus stop
However, once at a bus stop, you should be able to identify your position and know where you are heading to. Don't expect too much information from the bus stop itself. There will only be a sign and sometimes a shelter indicating that this is a bus stop. "In a very minimalistic moment it was decided that any further information is unnecessary at most stops, so do expect no information boards, timetables or even route maps." <ref name="about.com">[1].</ref>
Paying your fare
If you take Dublin bus for the first time, you can buy your ticket at the driver. Be sure to have the exact fare in coins ready. The driver won't take notes and you won't get any change back, just a ticket you can later exchange against cash in Dublin bus head office in O'Connel Street only. This hassle is all due to a little coin machine in front of every driver that doesn't allow notes nor change. It also has the disadvantage of not displaying the amount already inserted by the passenger. Count your money before you insert it.
Note that there are no ticket machines installed at the bus stations.
Getting to and from the airport
First and most convenient choice is a private bus company operating the Aircoach Line.
Price: 7 Euro one way, 12 Euro return
The buses are of a blue colour and rather modern. They follow Dublin's hotel linebut will stop at many points in and around Dublin City Center.
