Statues in Dublin

So why do we write about statues in Dublin on awaycity? This kind of art is defining the city of Dublin and an important part of its atmosphere. When studying its statues, one can learn much about Dublin's history, its origins and people. Sometimes disapproved, sometimes admired, you will find all kinds of statues on the map.

One thing that is specific about statues in Dublin is the fact that very often they are erected at the same level as pedestrians which brings them very close to the observer and makes them more human and less distant. The main exeption to that is the O'Connell statue on O'Connell Street where you will find it hard to distinguish the traits of Mr. O'Connell. Also because this huge statue is not situated on an open space but surrounded by streets, river and traffic. Maybe take a bus and sit upstairs to catch a better view.

Most other statues are at ground level and make it possible to take face-to-face pictures with a statue!

Future statues on Dublin?
