Dublinbikes is a rent-a-bike scheme for Dublin similar to the ones already in place in Paris, Stockholm, Milano and other European cities. Completion is scheduled for September 2009. You can now already find all stations mapped on awaycity. For the moment, it looks like the 40 stations are limited to the very city center only.

The target users for the network will be city centre residents and workers in the immediate north and south city centre, primarily the core employment destinations in Dublin.
The ‘dublinbikes’ scheme will operate between the hours of 5.00am – 12.30am seven days a week.

For an annual subscription fee of €10.00 bicycles can be taken and returned to any station on the network. Non-members can also avail of the network by using a credit card. This is necessary to provide security in the event of a bicycle not been returned. Charges for all users will allow an initial 30-minute free period per bicycle used with a relatively low charge per hour of rental thereafter (e.g. 30-60 minutes use will cost €0.50).

Cycling in Dublin has it's advantages but please watch for rush hour traffic if you are in the city centre area.

I've stopped using it.
There is rarely a free slot when I go to return my bike.
I once had to cycle back to O'Connell street because Jervis and Ormand quay had no available slots.
There needs to be more return stations, scattered further afield, there simply isn't enough. Heuston Station would be an obvious choice!

Why is it that everybody seems so negativ about this scheme? Why do so many assume that it will fail because of damaged and stolen bikes?
Lets see first and just try out! Every bicycle in this scheme is 1 bicycle more for Dublin!
If they are going to be damaged or stolen, they will just be replaced and that's it :-)
